The tune appears in the 1847 violin tutor of Providence, Rhode Island, violinist, music teacher and dance musician George Saunders. It is seen as a precursor to the old-time tune "[[Billy in the Lowground (1)]]," and, in the first strain, a derivative of the Irish "[[Belles of Tipperary (1)]]," and the Scottish "[[Braes of Auchtertyre (1)]]."
