Originally an ancient Scots harp tune, that James Manson (1846) describes as a "North Highland air." It was printed by Elias Howe c. 1867 as "[[Annotation:Chi-ri-vus]]", labelled "a North Highland air" perhaps copied from Manson's book. "Chiu-ri-ruo" was published in Edinburgh in 1784 by Patrick MacDonald, in his '''A collection of Highland vocal airs, never hitherto published, to which are added a few of the most lively country dances or reels of the North Highlands and Western Isles''' (appears as "Chiu-ri-ruo").
