Composed probably at the beginning of the 18th century (with lyrics that are rather risque or bawdy), but not recorded until the '''Flores Musicae''' collection of 1773. Perthshire fiddler-composer John Bowie printed the jig in 12/8 time in his c. 1789 '''Collection of Strathspey Reels & Country Dances &c.''' under the title "The [[Moor so wett]]".  The tune appears under the title "[[Cock o' the Midden (1)]]" in Joseph Crawhall's [http://www.asaplive.com/archive/detail.asp?id=M0404501] (1821-1896) 1872 collection of Northumbrian tunes. The title appears in Robert Bewick's Northumbrian pipe collection as "I'll Have Her Awa In Spite Of Her Minnie," perhaps the source for Bruce & Stokoe's '''Northumbrian Minstrelsy''', and it can be found with a very similar title in musician John Rook's (Waverly, near Wigton, Cumbria) c. 1840 music manuscript collection as "I’ll have her away in spite of her Minnie" where it is set with variations for the pipes.

Compare also with Carlisle musician Jospeh Barnes' "[[Weel take her away without leave of her Minny]]" (dated 1762 in ms.), musically unrelated but similar in title, lending credence that there was a song that once was set to various 6/8 tunes.
