Francis O'Neill credits the melody to the blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), although by what authority it is not known. It was printed in John Thomas Surenne's (1814-1878) '''Irish Songs without Words''' in 1854, sans composer attribution, and with the alternate title "[[Little Harvest-Rose (The)]]." This latter title was the one attached to the tune when it was collected by Edward Bunting at the end of the 18th century.
