The tune of "Susan Lick the Ladle" is unrelated to the tune of "Lick the Ladle Sandy"). Bayard remarked that he was not able to trace the tune satisfactorily in British and Irish collections, though he considered it to have a "marked Scoto-Irish flavor." He sees some general resemblance to "[[Irish Hautboy (The)]]," although stops short of calling it a cognate tune.
