Appendix 58, and was printed by William Chappell in the first volume of his works, dealing with older airs. "By the Bank as I Lay" is a sixteenth century ballad and was recorded in period accounts as a favorite of King Henry VIII, a skilled amateur musician who liked to sing. A later version was printed by Ravenscroft in his collection '''Deuteromelia''' (1609), under the heading "Freemen's Songs to three voices."
