REEL TARTES AUX POMMES (Apple Pies Reel). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Tartes aux pommes" is another tune that uses a "floating" first stain that can be traced to the first strain of "Aldridge's Hornpipe (1)," named for the famous latter 18th century stage dancer, Richard Aldridge. The strain was used in a number of tunes, each with different second strains, including "King of all Reels," "Leviathan Hornpipe," "Prairie Hornpipe," "Big Indian Hornpipe" and others. Allard researcher Jean Duval finds "Reel tartes aux pommes" cognate with "Lardner's Reel (1)" in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883), but here too, the second strain differs. "Aldridge's Hornpipe (1)" was also printed in Ryan's Mammoth Collection, but earlier versions may yet surface.
