The melody is listed as a 'jig', referring not to the familiar 6/8 time Irish jig, but to a type of duple-time syncopated dance tune that was popular in the mid-to-latter 19th century.  The term 'jig' may have been derived from its application to a solo dance, or may have associations to African-American origins.
