MOLONY'S JIG. AKA and see "Miss Dawson's Whim," "Owen Malone," "Trip to Denmark (1)." Irish, Jig (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune, of unknown provenance, originally appeared in Glasgow publisher James S. Aird's Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs (1799) as "Miss Dawson's Whim." Francis O'Neill collected the tune from piper Michael Dunlap in Chicago at the turn of the 20th century under the title "Owen Malone"; the 'Malone' and 'Molony's' are so close as to strongly suggest one title was a mishearing of the other. A Welsh version can be found as "Trip to Denmark (1)." The first strain is also shared with the English country dance melody "Shepherd's Jigg."
