KNOT UPO' DA HUMMLIBAND, DA. Scottish, Jig (6/8 time). Scotland, Shetland Isles. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABC. Pat Shaw explains that a hummliband is the piece of rope that goes round the thowl or thole-pin on the gunwale of a Shetland rowing boat to prevent the oar from slipping. He says that his source, John Stickle, always pronounced the 'K' in words like know and knife, as did many of the old Shetlanders.
