[[Wikipedia:Thomas Graham, 1st Baron Lynedoch]] (1848-1843) was a Scottish soldier and politician and improver of his estates. He led a stored career in the wars with France and Napoleon and was involved in a number of battles, eventually rising to the rank of General and gaining important, independent commands. At the time of Clark's publication, Graham had recently lost his wife, the beautiful Mary Cathcart, who died in June, 1793. A heartbroken Graham rededicated himself to military life.
