'''BELFAST LASSES, THE''' (Cailini Belfeirste). AKA and see "Humours of Castlecomer [2]." Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning. AA'B (O'Neill/1001): AABB' (O'Neill/Krassen). The name Belfast means 'crossing place by a sandbank'. The melody appears in the music manuscript copybook of fiddler John Burks, dated 1821 as "A Scotch Reel." Unfortunately, nothing is known of Burks, although he may have been from the north of England. The melody was contributed to Captain O'Neill's collection by fiddler and Chicago police sergeant James O'Neill, originally from northern Ireland.
