Uilleann piper Patrick James Tuohey (1865 – 1923) was born in County Galway, but emigrated with his parents to the United States when just a toddler. He learned to play the pipes from masters in the Irish neighborhoods of Boston and New York, and became, as O'Neill opined, "the genial wizard of the Irish pipers." He made a living as a musician on the variety and vaudeville stages of the late 19th and early 20th century, branching into acting in skits and and comedy sketches as well.
