YANKEE HORNPIPE. American, Hornpipe. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Painter William Sidney Mount was aged 22 when Higgins published his composition in his 1829 collection. Although nothing is known about Michael Higgins, quite a bit is known about Mount, who frequented New York musical society in the company of his uncle, flute player and composer Micah Hawkins. It is interesting to speculate that Mount might have known Higgins, or been acquainted with his work.
