The tune is identical to Francis O'Neill's "[[Bush in Bloom (The)]]", from the playing of Chicago fiddler John McFadden (originally from County Mayo). It was known at approximately the same time in independent Irish sources by the 'bloom' title, and must have been well-established in Ireland at least by the turn of the 20th century. Provenance could be assigned to either country. Researchers Conor Ward and Fr. John Quinn find the tune as an untitled reel Book 2 of the large c. 1883 music manuscript collection of County Leitrim fiddler and piper [[biography:Stephen Grier]] (c. 1824-1894).
