SCOLDING WIFE [4]. American, Reel (cut time). USA, Texas. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BBCC. The Texas tune called "The Scolding Wife" was recorded by the Thomasson Brothers, Jim and Benny (b. 1909), for Okeh Records in Dallas in 1929 (Matrix W402756), but was apparently not released by the company. Music researcher Charles Wolfe (1997) believes were the father and uncle of Texas fiddler Benny Thomasson (credited as being one of the founders of modern contest fiddling), who years later also recorded the reel. Folklorist John Lomax recorded it from the playing of J.D. Dillingham (fiddle), Cox on banjo and Johnson on guitar in October, 1935, in Austin, Texas (AFS 00578 B01). The tune bears resemblance to "Billy in the Lowground (1)."
