Alfred Bailey, a resident of Fleming County, has entered and won fiddle contests for over 50 years. His repertoire ranges from tunes learned from his father, other family members, and local players to tunes played over the radio. Bailey had been a police court judge in Flemingsburg. Kentucky fiddle researcher Jeff Todd Titon says that Bailey was "one of several musicians living in and around Bath County, in the Licking River area of the northeastern part of the state, who cultivated the northern tunes that had come down the Ohio River from New England, and out of Virginia as well. He was born on a farm in Fleming County, lived in Flemingsburg, and, like John Salyer, was a member of a local farming establishment....In 1973 he performed at the Smithsonian Institution's Festival of American Folklife."
