Researcher Jean Duval suggests Boucher's title may be a nod to Malouin, who won first prize in the 1926 regional Quebec fiddlers' competition. Malouin was aged 60 in 1933, when Boucher's collection was issued, perhaps making him an 'old' champion. Boucher himself also recorded the tune, adhering more to Malouin's recording than to the transcription in his book, says Duval. The researcher also notes the similarity between the first strain of Boucher's "Vieux Champion" with the first strain of "[[Galway Hornpipe (1) (The)]]."

VIEUX CHAMPION, LE. AKA and see "Reel de Rimouski." French-Canadian, Reel (cut time). G Major ('A' part), C Major ('B' part) and F Major ('C' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. The tune reel recorded in 1928 by fiddler biography:Fortunat Malouin as "Le Rimouski", better known nowadays as "Reel de Rimouski." Researcher Jean Duval suggests Boucher's title may be a nod to Malouin, who won first prize in the 1926 regional Quebec fiddlers' competition. Malouin was aged 60 in 1933, when Boucher's collection was issued, perhaps making him an 'old' champion. Boucher himself also recorded the tune, adhering more to Malouin's recording than to the transcription in his book, says Duval. The researcher also notes the similarity between the first strain of Boucher's "Vieux Champion" with the first strain of "Galway Hornpipe (1) (The)."
