KING OF MEENASILLAGH, THE (Ríl min na sailleach). Irish, Reel (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'B. The title "Meenasillagh" is a version of the Irish Min na sailleach and refers to a group of cultivated fields near Glencolmcille, County Donegal. Sailleach is the name for 'willow', as is the old word 'sally', from the same root as 'sali-' as in the willow-derived salicylic acid. According to Caoimhin Mac Aoidh, the local pronunciation of 'Ríl' (Reel) in the Irish title was close to the Irish word for king, Ri, and it was amusing for the locals to call the tune with Ri substituting for 'Ríl'.
