IRISHMAN'S LOVE [2], THE. AKA and see "Sweet Biddy of Ballyvourney." Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The reel was printed in Elias Howe's 1000 Jigs and Reels (c. 1867) as "Irishman He Loves a Lass (The)," and in a later Howe firm publication, Ryan's Mammoth Collection of 1050 Reels and Jigs (1883), as "Irishman's Love (2) (The)." It was one of the tunes deleted when that latter volume metamorphasized into Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes in 1940. Paul de Grae finds this tune to be a setting of O'Neill's "Sweet Biddy of Ballyvourney," also printed by Breathnach as "Tameen's Reel," and known as "Ceol na gCeártan" ("Music in the Forge") in The Dance Music of Willie Clancy. De Grae also finds a untitled reel in P.W. Joyce's Ancient Irish Music (1873, No. 51) that is a cognate, wherein Joyce remarks: "I noted down this tune from Ned Groggin, who has been the professional fiddle-player of Glenosheen in the county Limerick, from the time of my childhood to the present day" (i.e. c. 1830-1870) [1].
