The tune was recorded by collector Vance Randolph from the playing of Ozark fiddler Lon Jordan, who also collected the tune played by other regional fiddlers in the early 1940's. Buck Snort is not as uncommon a name in the United States as one might think; there are villages named Bucksnort in Tennessee.
