LADY BETTY WEMYSS. Scottish, Reel. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of this tune in print in Robert Bremner's 1757 collection (p. 21). James C. Dick (1903), in The Songs of Robert Burns, states that melodic material from "Lady Betty Wemmyss" and the strathspey "Stumpie/Stumpey" cover the "same subject." The tune appears in the large 1840 music manuscript collection of multi-instrumentalist John Rook, of Waverton, near Wigton, Cumbria, under the title "Lady Wennypot's Reel" (although the script is difficult to read).
