'''COOKIE SHINE'''. Scottish, Reel. F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. A cookie shine is a name for a tea party. The word 'shine' was often used to designate a festive and convivial social event, such as an assembly, wedding, or merry making-- "it was a great shine." However, 'shine' could also be applied to negative social events, such as quarrels, rows or scoldings great and small (designated a 'grand shine' or 'bit shine', as the case might have been).  [Jamieson et al, ''An Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language'', 1879].
