The tune was printed by Biography:Daniel Dow (sometimes Donald) in his A collection of ancient Scots music for the violin, harpsichord or German flute, never before printed consisting of ports, salutations, marches or piobrachs, printed in Edinburgh c. 1778 (although various dates are given, including 1775 and 1776).
