The Marchioness of Normanby in Marshall's time was Maria Phipps (née Liddell, 1798-1882), eldest daughter of 1st Baron Ravensworth; wife of 1st Marquess of Normanby, whom she married in 1818. The titles she held were the Countess of Mulgrave (1831-1838), Marchioness of Normanby (1838-1863) and Dowager Marchioness of Normanby (1863-1882), and she was Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria, from 1837-1841.

William Marshall

The Marchioness of Normanby in Marshall's time was Maria Phipps (née Liddell, 1798-1882), eldest daughter of 1st Baron Ravensworth; wife of 1st Marquess of Normanby, whom she married in 1818. The titles she held were the Countess of Mulgrave (1831-1838), Marchioness of Normanby (1838-1863) and Dowager Marchioness of Normanby (1863-1882), and she was Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria, from 1837-1841. Thus the jig's title "Marchioness of Normanby" may have been an editorial upgrade, as Marshall would have known her as the Countess of Mulgrave.
