MATELOTTE. German, Dutch; Country Dance tune (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Boehme (1886) notes: "Holzshuhtanz der Matrosen in Holland. Aehnlich ist Hornpipe" (Named for the sailors in Holland. Similar to a hornpipe). Bayard (1981) connects this air, which uses strains in international currency (usually in duple time), with "Washington's March (1)," "Exhibition March No. 1," "Finlands Svenska Folkdigtning," "Morning Fair," "Texarkana Hornpipe," "Tomorrow Morning."
