The melody and dance directions first appeared in John Hinton's periodical Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (London, 1755). It also appeared in John Johnson's 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 8 (London, 1758). Chalford Bottom is the name of a valley in Gloucester, through which runs the River Froome. It was a cloth manufacturing center in the 18th century, with some estates.
