LORD PALMERSTON'S FAVOURITE. Scottish, Jig. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune appears in the 1801 collection of Biography:John Pringle. Although Pringle composed most of the tunes in his collection (and identified them with his name), this "slowish" jig is not so identified and there is no attribution accompanying it.
At the time Pringle's collection was published, Lord Palmerston was Henry Temple [1], 2nd Viscount Palmerston, (1739-1802), a member of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy whose family owned a vast estate in County Sligo. Palmerston spent his life in public service as a Member of Parliament, and in various governmental posts in Great Britain. He was also a collector of art and antiquities.
