MOUNT PLEASANT [1]. American, Air or March (4/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. A shape note hymn tune composed in 1789 by James Leach, employed by Alstead, New Hampshire, fiddler Randy Miller as a march. Leach was born at Wadley, near Lancashire, in 1762, and published a collection of hymns and Psalm tunes in 1789, many of which found their way into American sacred harp and other hymn collections, such as the Missouri Harmony (1837, p. 199). He is the composer of "Oldham," "Smyrna" and other popular shape note hymns. Unfortunately, an accident in 1798 cut short his life, and he is buried in Rockdale, England.
