BLUE EYED LASSIE [2], THE. Scottish, Air (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. Composed by Robert Riddell of Ayr, an amateur fiddler and composer, and neighbor and friend of Robert Burns. Burns wrote a song for a tune that was printed in Johnson's Scots Musical Museum, vol. 3 (1790; p. 304), even though Riddell had also written words to it. Emmerson (1971) declares, "it is not disputed that Riddell had no great musical gifts," although John Glenn was of the opinion that, while Riddell's words were "very inferior," the melody "is good, but it possess a compass too extensive for the voice."
