LICK THE LADDLE SANDIE/SANDY [1]. Scottish, Reel. A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD (Marshall): AAB (Athole, Gow). The tune was published in in 1800 on a sheet called the Kinrara Collection (really just one sheet printed on both sides) by William Marshall (1748-1833), and is sometimes therefore attributed to him. The title, if not the tune, predates the famous composer of strathspeys. Gow (1802) says: "The Sets we have seen formerly of this Tune begins with the 2nd Strain (published we suppose by mistake) in place of the first as now given." Derivatives of the tune (some quite distanced) were collected from southwestern Pennsylvania fiddlers in the mid-20th century by Samuel Bayard under the titles "O Little Girl what Makes You Look so Clever," "Girl that Looks so Clever O!," "Susan Lick the Ladle," and "Darkey Under the Woodpile."
