Scott Skinner (1843-1927), who explains at the bottom of his manuscript copy [1] that the cairngorm was "a gold scarf pin presented to the composer by an enthusiastic Perthshire amateur." He also notes: "This Reel was written at the suggestion of Mr Alexander Troup, Ballater, a gentleman who has done valuable service to Scottish Music. The composer has known him for 30 years."
