John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of the tune in print in Alexander McGlashan's 1780 collection (p. 18), however a version of the tune predating McGlashan is to be found in Edinburgh publisher Neil Stewart's 1761 collection under the title "Miss Lucy Campbell."
