The melody appears as an untitled jig in the mid-19th century collections of John Clinton, P.M. Haverty, and R.M. Levey. Researcher Conor Ward found a version of the melody in Fleischmann's Sources of Irish Traditional Music, c. 1600-1855, vol. 2 (New York, 1998, No. 5294), sourced to T.S. Cooke's opera Mother Goose, which explains the title in Ryan's Mammoth Collection.
