John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the tune in Alexander McGlashan's 1780 collection, although he also finds the "earliest printing" of the tune under the name "Munro's Rant (The)" in Angus Cumming's collection printed the same year. The strathspey was later published by Robert Petrie in his Third Collection (c. 1800) under the title "Peep a Day" ("Peep o' Day (2)").
