While the person of the title could be any "Mr. Clark," there was a musician-composer named John Clark who published a Collection of New Strathspey Reels & Country Dances in Perth in 1795, the year after McLaren issued his collection. Clark dedicated it to the Musical Society of Perth. Unfortunately, nothing is known about him.
