The tune is a variant of the well-known composition "Sheebeg and Sheemore" attributed to harper Turlough Carolan and first printed by John and William Neale in Dublin in their Celebrated Irish Tunes (). "Bonny Cuckoo" was collected by Belfast collector Edward Bunting (1773-1843) in the district of Ballinascreen. See closely related versions by Howe ("Young Cuckoo") and O'Neill ("Bonny Cuckoo (The)").
