DOWN IN THE NORTH COUNTRY. AKA - "Farmer's Daughter of Merry Wakefield." English, Air. F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. The air appears in John Gay's Beggar's Opera (1729) under the title "What gudgeons are we men." Frank Kidson (1922) says it was a popular and serviceable 17th century tune that appears as the vehicle for numerous songs with various names.
