DUCHESS OF BUCCLEUCH [1]. Scottish, Strathspey. F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833), perhaps in honor of the wife of Charles Montagu-Scott (1772-1819), 4th Duke of Buccleuch, who held the title during most of Marshall's adult life. She was the Honourable Harriet Katherine Townshend, daughter of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney (for whom the town of Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, is named). The strathspey was popularized among Cape Breton fiddlers by Angus Chisholm.
