RIDDLE, THE. English, Reel (cut time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune with country dance directions was first published in London by John Johnson in his Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 8 (1758, p. 6). The melody was also included (with slight melodic variations) by Northumbrian musician William Vickers in his 1770 music manuscript.
