ROCKING IN A WEARY LAND. Old-Time, Breakdown. USA; southwestern Virginia, western North Carolina. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. In the repertoire of Luther Davis (1887-1986), Galax, Va., Bertie Mae Dickens of Ennice, North Carolina, and others from the region. The title is biblical and comes from the Old Testament verse:

Isaiah 32:1-2 Behold, a king shall reign in righteous and a prince shall rule in judgment. And a man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as a shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

Jesus was referred to by American Christians as the ‘rock in a weary land.’
