Tune properties and standard notation
FLANNEL JACKET, THE. AKA and see "Peeler's Jacket (2)," "Peeler's Cap," "Hibernia's Pride." Irish (originally), American; Reel. Ireland, county Limerick. USA, southwestern Pa. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Allan's, Ford): AA'B (O'Neill): AB (Bayard, Joyce, Roche). Bayard (1981) thinks it of Irish origin, while Petrie (1855) gives a note saying it is no older than the 18th century. Joyce (1873) remarks "this was a favourite dance tune, twenty-five or thirty years ago in the county Limerick, where I learned it from constantly hearing it played by fiddlers and pipers. I also heard it often called by the name of 'The Peeler's Jacket'." Cape Breton fiddler Johnny Wilmot recorded the tune in the 1960's.
Source for notated version: Walter Neal (Armstrong County, Pa., 1952) [Bayard]; "From P. Carew's MS" [Stanford/Petrie].
