MRS. DRUMMOND OF LOGIEALMOND. Scottish, Reel. E Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Surenne): AAB (Gow, Stewart-Robertson). Composed by Niel Gow (1727-1807). Logiealmond or Logie Almond, Perthshire, was a settlement in Glen Almond, on the River Almond, about 8 miles northwest of Perth city. A branch of the Drummond family had an estate at Logiealomond, most famously Sir William Drummond (1780-1828), a politician, ambassador (to the Ottoman Empire, succeeding Lord Elgin), poet and philosopher (whose most famous work was the metaphysical Academical Questions, 1805). He did not marry, so perhaps “Mrs. Drummond of Logiealmond” refers to his mother. Sir William’s lasting quote is “He who will not reason is a bigot; he who cannot is a fool; and he who dares not is a slave.”
