SHEPHERD'S DAUGHTER [2], THE. AKA and see "Parson upon Dorothy." English, Country Dance Tune (4/4 or 2/2 time). G Dorian (Chappell): G Minor (Sharp). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABC (Sharp): ABCC (Chappell). Chappell (1859) quotes Percy who states this air was a popular tune in the time of Elizabeth I, "being usually printed with her picture before it." The melody was printed by John Playford in the 2nd edition of The Dancing Master (1652) as "Parson upon Dorothy," with "The Shepherd's Daughter" as the alternate title. The dance and tune were retained in the second and both third editions of The Dancing Master, published in 1652, 1657 and 1665. The fourth and fifth editions of Playford's work gave "Shepherd's Daughter" as the primary title.
