Tune properties and standard notation
GIFT FROM THE FAIRIES. AKA - "Fairy Jig (3)," "Frainc a'Phoill," "Frank of the Hollow." from the Irish, Slip Jig (9/8 time). D Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. From the playing of Donegal fiddler Mickey Doherty (older brother of John Doherty and a member of the famous traveller musical family) who said he had it from the fairies. It was recorded in the field in 1949 by Kevin Danaher and Sean O' hEochaidh of the Irish Folklore Commission. The group Altan recorded it on the eponymous album in 1987 as "The Fairy Jig." The slip jig is occasionally referred to as "Frainc a'Phoill" (King of the Pipers", although that name also refers to several (5) tunes from Donegal.
