It was played by Bath County, Kentucky, fiddler George Lee Hawkins (1904-1991), who kept the hornpipe dotted rhythms in his playing, resisting the temptation to turn it into a reel (as happened with many hornpipes in old-time tradition), and to change the key.  Montreal fiddler Joseph Allard (1873-1947) recorded the hornpipe under the title "[[Reel des chantiers]]/"[[Reel du chauffeur]]" in 1930, and may have picked it up from New England fiddlers.
