BUCKWHEAT BATTER. Old-Time, Jig. The melody also appears in a 1950 collection entitled Don Messer's Favorite Melodies (referencing the great 'down-east' style Canadian fiddler Don Messer). E.F. Adam (Old Time Fiddlers Favorite Barn Dance Tunes for the Violin), 1928.
Recorded source: Gennett 6604 (78 RPM), 1928, Tweedy Brothers (W.Va. brother band Harry, Charles and George, who played twin fiddles and piano). Gennett 3292 (78 RPM), 1926, Tom Owen's Barn Dance Trio of WLS (Paul Tyler says that Owens, a caller, was a native of Missouri).
