There were several Lady Catherine Stewarts to whom the title may refer. One was the daughter of the 6th Earl of Galloway who married her cousin, James Murray of Broughton, in 1752. Murray was a Member of Parliament for Wigtownshire. He deserted Catherine to elope with Grace Johnston, who happened to be his niece. A man of wealth, Murray suffered no consequences due to this action and kept his association with his wife's family, one of whose relations he supported in an election at the time. Another Lady Catharine Stewart was the daughter of John, 7th Earl of Galloway, who married Sir James Graham (1st Baronet of Netherby) in 1782. She died in 1836.
