RAKE'S RANT, THE. AKA and see "Kiss for a Half Pennie (A)." Scottish, Reel (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The word 'Rakes' is generally taken to be a shortened form of 'rakehell', which itself stems from the Old Icelandic word reikall, meaning "wandering” or “unsettled." The melody appears in the Drummond Castle Manuscript (1734, No. 3), in the possession of the Earl of Ancaster at Drummond Castle. It is inscribed "A Collection of the best Highland Reels written by David Young, W.M. & Accomptant."
