NEW YEAR, THE. Canadian, Pipe March (6/8 time). A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. A composition of Cape Breton musician Malcolm Gillis (1856-1929), the 'Margaree Bard', who also composed songs and poems in Gaelic and English. Gillis was a huge musical talent, according to Barry Shears (1986), and could play the accordion, violin, bagpipes, uilleann pipes, piano and organ. He directed the local choir and composed several popular Gaelic songs. A collection of his work was published in Smeorach Nan Cnoc's Nan Gleann in 1939 by Alexander MacLaren & Sons, Glasgow, Scotland.
